Berry van Berkum
Berry studied the organ, improvisation and piano at the conservatorium in
Arnhem with Bert Matter and Jacques Hendriks respectively. He participated
in masterclasses with Harald Vogel and Louis Thiry, and pursued his improvisation
studies with Bert van den Brink and Jan Welmers, and composition with Andries
van Rossem and Klaas de Vries. Berry van Berkum was a prizewinner at international
organ competitions, including the Dollard Festival (Germany), and has recorded
music by Messiaen, Welmers, Bach, and others for radio and CD. He is a well
known solo player and (jazz) improviser in the Netherlands and abroad. He
recorded in 2016 with the trio HOT the CD Bird & Beyond (www.hetorgeltrio.nl).
Berry van Berkum is also well known as a silent movie accompanist, and as an actor
and musician in music theatre productions.
As a composer he wrote numerous commissioned works for several instruments and for choir. Examples of his work can be found at www.berryvanberkum.nl/compositions. He was appointed organist of the Nicolaïkerk in Utrecht in 2010 and is since 2017 also organist of the Dominicanenkerk in Zwolle. |
