picture of Jack McDuff
Jack McDuff
Jack, a.k.a. Brother Jack, (*1926) was born in Champaign/IL. He taught himself to play the double bass, studied in Cincinatti, then moved to Chicago where he worked together with Johnny Griffin. In the 50's, Jack began to discover the piano as his favorite instrument. Some years later, Jimmy Smith gave him the impulses to change to the organ. At that time, he formed his first group of his own.

Since then, he made his mark on the then very young jazz organ scene. His recordings for Prestige in the 60's brought him the reputation of the leading "funky" jazz organ player. Jack toured through America as well through Europe. The list of famous musicians with whom he played together is endless, like Joe Henderson, George Benson, Pat Martino, Jimmy Witherspoon, Roland Kirk, Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons and Red Holloway, to mention only a few. McDuff was also considered to be an innovative arranger, marvelous band leader and legendary talent scout.

In 1990, Jack moved to Minneapolis where he died of a heart attack 23 January 2001.
